About

I’m Maike Herrmann, a textile designer and illustrator. Originally from Germany, I am now based in Glasgow, Scotland.

Since working on the final project for my degree in Textile Design at DJCAD, Dundee, Scotland, I have wanted to use textile art to decorate and encourage an uplifting atmosphere in living spaces.

I create one-off hand-printed wall-hangings as well as digitally printed hangings in my home studio. For each, I use a different creative process.

My bespoke wall-hangings are screen-printed using various techniques, such as stencilling. Visual observations of natural and man-made elements inspire me to create unique colours, shapes, and textures. Then, I carefully compose these elements to emit warmth, comfort, or tranquillity.

For my digital hangings, I begin by creating paintings and drawings that display detailed scenes of actual places in which I explore the transition from realism to the outlandish and fantastical. These are scanned and reproduced by using a local fabric printing service in Glasgow, Scotland. As a result, the hangings become metaphorical windows inviting you to look beyond the limits of the room.

I use textiles as a more durable and low maintenance alternative to art on paper and explore fabrics’ appealing sensory characteristics.
